Favorite NYC coffee shops

Favorite NYC coffee shops

The are few things in life that I love more than coffee. While New York like most cities has its share of Starbucks and Duncans, but nothing beats grabbing a drink and a treat at your favorite neighborhood coffee shop. Here are some favorites from different neighborhoods that I’ve lived in or worked in over the course of my Big Apple life.

  1. Burrow (DUMBO): This hidden gem is in the lobby of an office building on Jay Street. They are temporarily closed due to COVID but you can order their cakes or baked goods online for delivery or pick up. Their treats aren’t overly sweet and many feature Asian flavors and spices. What to order: When Burrow reopens I suggest grabbing a Cortado and a Macha Financher.

  2. Cafe Capri (Ozone Park): Weekly trips to Cafe Capri have been my saving grace the past few weeks. They have seating in front as well as some private back garden seating. Aside from traditional coffee house drinks, you’ll also find lunch options, Italian pastries, and creamy gelato on the menu. What to order: A Latte and a Cheesecake Cone.

  3. Cafe Lalo (Upper West Side): I love this cafe so much. They have a lovely international brunch menu and delicious salads and sandwiches, but dessert is certainly the star of the show. What to order: Cafe Au Lait and a Mixed Berry or Fruit Tart.

  4. Cafe Reggio (The Village): This beautiful cafe has been a part of NYC for almost 100 years and is reportedly the place where cappuccinos were first served. You can head there to enjoy a scrumptious meal or just a coffee. What to order: A Cappuccino and a Napolean.

  5. Gorilla Coffee (Park Slope): This is one of my favorite roasters in New York. I love buying their blends as gifts for friends from out of town. They used to have a location on 5th avenue in the Slope, which closed several years ago, but you can still enjoy their beverages by visiting their cafe on Bergan Street. What to order: Pour Over Coffee and Biscotti.

  6. Gregory’s Coffee (Garment District): This is my favorite “chain” coffee in the city. They have locations throughout NYC, Jersey City, and D.C. When I worked in midtown they were a staple for me. What to order: Iced Coffee and Vegan Power Bites.

  7. Jessi’s Coffee Shop (Bushwick): Located right off the Montrose L stop, this coffee shop serves up some of my favorite sandwiches in the city. Their breastfasts are incredible. What to order: Drip Coffee and Jessi’s Breakfast Burrito

  8. Le Cafe Coffee (Union Square): This is a great place to pop in and grab a coffee and pastry on your way to work or the farmer’s market. What to order: Rose Latte and a Croissant.

  9. Qathra (Ditmas Park): This cozy cafe has a menu that features North African and Middle Eastern dishes. What to order: French Press and Eqyptian Poached Eggs.

  10. St. Kilda (Chelsea): This coffee house also has a second location in Midtown. When I worked in Chelsea I would alter my route to work to hit different coffee houses I enjoyed. This was one of my weekly go-to’s. What to order: Espresso and Gluten-Free Pistachio Cardamom Bread.
