Spring 2022 arts roundup: Part 2

Here is the second installment of the shows I recently enjoyed in the Big Apple.

American Buffalo: This revival of Mamet’s classic just ended this past weekend. Performing at Circle in the Square which is a theater in the round made it feel like you were part of the pawn shop the play is set in. Sam Rockwell, Laurence Fishburne, and Darren Criss were all amazing.

The Amish Outlaws at Brooklyn Bowl: My favorite cover band rarely makes it to NYC but when they do I’m always game to go to their show. Some of the band members were raised Amish and perform covers in traditional attire. You can check out their tour schedule.

The Orchard: This adaptation of the Cherry Orchard finished performances in early July. The classic text was met was perfectly married with a modern dystopian set, robots, and perfect casting. Mikhail Baryshnikov and Jessica Hecht lead an incredible ensemble.

Tony Danza at Cafe Carlyle: He can sing, tap dance, play the ukelele, and tell great stories. We may know Tony Danza from TV but he was in his element with his cabaret act at the iconic Carlyle Hotel. Cafe Carlyle always has amazing performances. Check their calendar to find out about future shows.

Dreaming Zenzile: This musical is based on the life of Miriam Makeba and introduced me to writer, performer, singer, and all around amazing artist Somi Kakoma. The show ended it’s run at the New York Theatre Workshop in June but you can check out their 2022/2023 season on their website.
