I know I’m biased but there are certain things New York just does better than any other city in the country – public transit, bagels, and of course pizza. Sorry Chicago you can keep your deep dish, there is nothing like a thin, hot slice of New York pizza. I have a number of pizzerias in the city I love, but my absolute favorite is Sal & Carmine’s on the Upper West Side.

My partner Lou and I took shelter in place very seriously. We moved many of my things (and my rabbit Victoria) from my apartment in Manhattan to Lou’s home in Queens. Since we were running errands for Lou’s parents we wanted to be very responsible about not being out in public other than going to the grocery store once a week and walking around our neighborhood. Things have opened up a bit more in the city. We still are very cautious about going out because we don’t want to be carriers and potentially harm others. We have been able to go back to my place uptown now though and since carryout is an option I got to introduce Lou to my favorite pie in the city.

Sal & Carmine have had a few different locations over the years, but they’ve been a part of the UWS since 1959! Their current location is on Broadway and 102nd street. It’s a no-frills join where you can watch the fresh pizza dough get kneaded as you order at the counter. You can order pizza by the slice or by the pie. It’s thin, crispy, and the sauce is to die for - tangy and sweet. Aside from the typical assortment of sodas they also have cans of Dr. Brown’s and bottles of Yoo-hoo of all things.

I love Sal & Carmine. It was always my pizza take-out go to. If you’re on the Upper West Side, Sal & Carmine are available seven days a week for pick up or delivery.
