Best cookies in NYC

Our friend Seung surprised us this weekend with an assortment of cookies from Levain Bakery. It got my thinking about some of my favorite cookies in the city. If you have a sweet tooth here are some amazing cookies to satisfy your craving.

  1. By the Way Bakery: This kosher bakery serves up treats that are dairy-free and gluten-free but you would never know. This is my go-to spot for buying desserts for friends with certain food allergies. The almond cookies are my favorite and they melt in your mouth. By the Way, has two locations in the city on the Upper West and Upper East Sides. They also have outlets in Westchester and Greenwich, CT.

  2. Insomnia Cookies: This chain now has locations in multiple states, but it started off as a bakery near NYU where college students could get a sweet fix late at night. They deliver so if you live in range of one of their locations you can get warm cookies and milk delivered to you at 2 AM if you like. They have an extensive menu, but I particularly love the M&M and the Oatmeal Raisin.

  3. Levain Bakery: These cookies are so huge that they are perfect for sharing, but they are so good that you won’t want to. They started off on the Upper West Side and it’s not unusual to see a line of people wrapped around the block waiting to get their sugar fix. They have since expanded and have other locations in NoHo, Harlem, Williamsburg, and the Upper East Side. The chocolate chip walnut is their signature, but my favorite is the dark chocolate with peanut butter chips.

  4. One Girl Cookies: I did a write up of this Brooklyn cafe back in July. This is great if you are looking for a bite-size treat. The shortbread bars, classic chocolate chip, and apricot jam cookies are among my favorites. They also make a perfect cafe au lait. Their Cobble Hill and DUMBO locations are currently open.

  5. Zabars: This is a grocery store and not exclusively a bakery, but I had to include this Upper West Side staple because they make the best Black and White cookies which are my all-time favorite. They also have incredible rugelach.
