Animal rescues in NYC

Animal rescues in NYC

I adopted two rabbits from rescue groups and giving Milo and Victoria a happy, healthy, and safe home has been one of the greatest joys of my life. With more and more people staying home there has been an uptick in people bringing pets into their homes. If you are living in New York City and thinking of getting a pet, I recommend checking out the following rescue groups and shelters.

Animal Care Centers of NY: ACC has centers in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Staten Island. They also have an extensive foster network throughout the city. They have cats, dogs, rabbits, and occasionally other small animals that are found or surrendered in the city. They also partner with a number of rescue groups. Milo, my first rabbit lived at the Manhattan ACC before he was pulled by Rabbit Rescue and Rehab.

Brooklyn Cat Cafe: This nonprofit allows visitors to come and sit with the cats and kittens that are up for adoption. With COVID restrictions you now need to pre-book your time slot for your visit, but what better way to de-stress than to visit a bunch of adorable cats and maybe even give one a forever home?

You can visit the Brooklyn Cat Cafe in Brooklyn Heights by making a reservation online.

Pupstarz Rescue: Several of my friends found their dogs through Pupstarz Rescue. They make sure to help place you with the right dog or cat for you. They also have applications for people interested in fostering.

Rabbit Rescue and Rehab: This is the NYC chapter of the House Rabbit Society. I adopted both Milo and Victoria from this organization. I've also volunteered at adoption events. transported rabbits to vet appointments, and have fostered in the past. It’s a wonderful organization if you’re ready to bring a bunny into your life.

Jimmy was a former Rabbit Rescue and Rehab resident. He spent Christmas at my apartment one year and has since found his forever home.

Sean Casey Animal Rescue: This shelter in Brooklyn is wonderful. My friends’ have the most incredible beagle who was a resident at Sean Casey. They have dogs, cats, birds, and small pets. Victoria was originally at Sean Casey before she was with her former foster dad.

If you aren’t in the market for a new pet all of these organizations are looking for volunteers, fosters, and donations.
