An afternoon in Williamsburg
The Domino Sugar factory that used to sit along the East River in Williamsburg closed its doors back in 2004, a few years before I move to NYC. The old factory site is now one of the loveliest parks in Brooklyn and it’s the perfect place to spend a summer afternoon.
My partner Lou and I headed there this past weekend and had lunch at Roberta’s. This pizzaria’s original Bushwick location is still thriving and they opened this second Brooklyn outpost earlier this spring. Like its big sister, this new location is popular so I recommend getting there when they open to snag a table and one of their mouth-watering pies.
After lunch, Lou and I walked off our pizza in the park and took time to play a little Bocce Ball. We then headed to Odd Fellows for some ice cream. We continued our jaunt around the waterfront area but a trip to Mekelburg’s which in addition to being a bar and restaurant has a fantastic food shop.
We did some window shopping down Bedford and Metropolitan Avenues before ending up at the Brooklyn Mini Mall to browse books at Spoonbill and Sugartown, The afternoon ended with drinks at Surf Bar where you can enjoy Hawaiin beers and tiki drinks in the beautiful backyard garden or in their dark indoor bar with a sand-filled floor.
Williamsburg has many facets and ways to spend an afternoon. This was just how we spent this particular one.
