NYC Food Halls

Food halls in NYC are like the more sophisticated version of the mall food court. Instead of chains of fast food you have incredible options for taking yourself on a culinary journey around any corner of world you choose. You can make this gastronomic trip without your passport. I’ll be delving into some of my favorite food halls this month and highlighting some specific stands and restaurants you won’t want to miss on your visit.

Chelsea Market: This is arguably the food hall in the city that most tourists flock to but we locals love it too. I used to work near here for years so it was a frequent stop for breakfast, lunch, or drinks after work. The vendors have changed over the years and the addition of Chelsea Local has been a welcome one. I’ll be featuring Chelsea Market and diving into some of my favorite stops there in a future post.

Dekalb Market: I love this downtown Brooklyn Market. It’s conveniently located at City Point so I’m often there whether it’s making a run to Trader Joe’s or Target, catching a movie at Almo Drafthouse, or browsing books at McNally Jackson. This is a food hall I’ll be featuring in a dedicated post.

Essex Market: This Lower East Side Market is multiple floors and houses a number of grocery options too. My personal favorite vendor here is Arancini Bros. They serve up traditional rice balls with a twist on the classic flavors. You can try unusual varieties including buffalo chicken, cheesesteak, and even Nutella.

Industry City: I could fill a month’s worth of blog posts just on Industry City. Located in Sunset Park, Brooklyn this collection of former warehouses has become one of the best shopping, art, and food destinations in the city. In an upcoming post, I’ll be delving into the food hall, Japan Village, and other restaurants there.

New World Mall: So I mentioned the good old mall food court. This food hall is the closest to that feel since it is located in a shopping center but you won’t find an Orange Julius or Cinnabon here. Located in Flushing the heart of Queen’s Chinatown this hall features food from different regions of China, Korea, and has multiple options for bubble tea.

What’s your favorite food hall in the city?
