The Center for Fiction
I love libraries and bookstores. They are my happy place. Fortunately, New York has three incredible library systems across five boroughs and a range of general and specialty bookstores. One of my favorite bookstores is the Center for Fiction in Brooklyn.
The Center for Fiction is nestled between Fort Greene and Downtown Brooklyn. As its name implies the primary focus of its store is fiction, although they do sell some cookbooks near their cafe. My friend Elaine recently took me to a members’ event at the center. Membership supports the center in its mission for helping early-career writers. Members have access to talks, discounts on books, access to the center’s lending library, and more.
I joined after attending a members’ social with Elaine because I was enthralled by the reading rooms members have access to. The rooms are well-lit and quiet. They are a great place to read and since some of the rooms are laptop friendly it’s also a lovely place to catch up on some work or writing. Center members also enjoy rooftop access and can sit outside and read while the weather is nice.
The bookstore and center are well worth a visit if you find yourself in Brooklyn. You can also support them by shopping from their online store.
