Hi.

Welcome. I document life in NYC and my travels beyond the Big Apple. Thanks for joining me!

Book lovers' New York

Book lovers' New York

I’m a bookworm. Honestly, if someone gave me a pile of money and told me I could start any business I wanted I would build the bookstore of my dreams. The physical bookshop isn’t dead in New York. COVID has certainly taken its toll on retail though. You can support local bookstores by visiting and purchasing if you are able, ordering from them online, or buying gift cards to use in the future. Here are some of my favorite bookstores in NYC. I’ve selected ones that have an online presence so that you can also purchase from the comfort of your home if an in-person visit isn’t in the cards for you.

  1. Bookculture: (Morningside Heights & Long Island City)- Specialize in fiction, non-fiction, children, and academia/textbooks. They also have some wonderful stationery and gifts in their shops.

  2. Books of Wonder: (Upper West Side & Union Square)- A wonderful children’s bookstore. They have everything from classics to new releases.

  3. The Center for Fiction: (Fort Greene) A wonderful bookstore that celebrates adult and children’s fiction.

  4. Greenlight Bookstore: (Fort Greene & Lefferts Garden)-Charming bookstore that has a little bit of everything. They do a wonderful job of curating and celebrating Brooklyn writers.

  5. Kitchen Arts & Letters: (Upper East Side)- New and out of print cookbooks.

  6. The Lit Bar: (Mott Haven)-This bookstore fills a gap in the underserved Bronx which was bookstore less for a time. They have a wonderful collection dedicated to surviving 2020.

  7. Midtown Comics: (Times Square & Astoria)-A comic book and graphic novel lover’s dream. They also have an amazing assortment of Funko Pop figures and other collectibles.

  8. Sister’s Uptown: (Harlem)-A wonderful collection of every genre of book including a wide offering on black studies, social justice, and sociology.

  9. Spoonbill & Sugartown Booksellers: (Williamsburg)- A little bit of everything, but in particular they have wonderful biography and arts sections. They also carry an assortment of notebooks and cards.

  10. Strand: (Union Square & Upper West Side)-18 miles of books. Anything you are looking for you’ll find here. They also have a wonderful novelty and gifts section.

I have many more bookstores to highlight so I’m sure I’ll be publishing a second list soon. Happy reading.
