The best card stores in NYC
I love snail mail and greeting cards. I enjoy making my own cards, but it is also fun and often less work to buy ready-made cards, especially when you can find unique ones that will speak to the recipient. If you are in need of some last-minute Valentine’s Day cards here are some shops that are worth checking out.
Friends NYC (Bushwick): This Brooklyn shop is a little bit of everything. They have vintage fashion for resale, new apparel items, and gifts. They have a small, but eclectic card section that I love. If you are looking for a card for a friend with Boho or New Age tastes, you’ll find the perfect one here. You can also purchase from them online.
Greenwich Letterpress (West Village): I love this little store that features some of the most fun original cards and stationery. This is the place to shop for the pop culture aficionado in your life. They also do custom invitations for weddings and other occasions. If you don’t live in NYC you can shop from their site.
Lockwood Paper (Astoria): I mentioned Lockwood in a recent post about Astoria. This store has an amazing selection of cards, pens, and stickers. They also sell clothing and gifts at their next-door outpost, Lockwood Style. They have additional stores in Jackson Heights and Greenpoint. You can also shop online from their site.
Magpie (Upper West Side): Magpie is one of my favorite gift stores in the city. They have beautiful jewelry, unique home goods, and apparel and accessories for babies and adults. They also have a great selection of greeting cards and stationery. Don’t miss their vintage kick knacks towards the front of the store. It’s fun to throw in a 1960’s barrette or Yogi Bear fortune-telling fish in with your snail mail. Some of their merchandise can be purchased from their site.
Strand Books (Union Square): One of the best bookstores in the city, is also one of the best card and gift stores. You’ll find the perfect note here for the bookworm in your life. They also have a great selection of notebooks, totes, buttons, and accessories.
