Hi.

Welcome. I document life in NYC and my travels beyond the Big Apple. Thanks for joining me!

NYC butcher shops

New York City has a slew of specialty food stores which includes a variety of butcher shops. Here are five of my favorites:

  1. A & S Italian Pork Store (Ozone Park): This is more than a butcher shop. This family-owned business has a wonderful selection of Italian pantry staples, a fresh antipasto bar, and some of the best bread I’ve ever had. If you aren’t an omnivore go for an eggplant roll, it will change your life.

  2. Dickson’s Farmstand Meats (Chelsea): When I worked near Chelsea Market this was a frequent stop of mine. Aside from beautiful cuts of meat they also have a restaurant with prepared lunches and dinners. They make delicious reubens and brisket sandwiches. They also sell seasoning and cooking fat so you can prepare gourmet feasts at home.

  3. Foster Sundry (Bushwick): Lou and I had a weekend date here this fall. We got some of their incredible breakfast sandwiches to go and ate them on the benches outside the shop. Lou is not an egg person so he had what may be the best BLT I’ve ever had. He was lucky I didn’t take it from him. In the butcher shop, they have some of the most unusual flavored sausages I’ve ever tasted. We enjoyed their Philadelphia Cheesesteak and Soup Dumpling Sausages at home.

  4. The Meat Hook (Williamsburg): I used to work off the L train and would often stop at The Meat Hook on the way home to pick up something to make for dinner. They have a great selection of beef, pork, poultry, and lamb. They also carry fresh produce which makes this an easy one-stop-shop.

  5. Schatzie the Butcher (Upper West Side): Schatzie is a bit of a local celebrity to my family. My sister always gets her brisket from him for Jewish holidays. He is my go-to for Christmas Eve Oso Bucco. You can also get incredible burgers from his son Richie.
